The Leonina Castle is a fortress built in the 12th century, once the residence of Cardinal Fabio Chigi, later Pope Alexander VII.
In 1234, the castle was the setting for a battle between the Sienese and the Orvietans for the conquest of the territory. The fortress suffered countless damages and was later transformed into a Renaissance castle, during the 15th century.
After a long, troubled period, Leonina Castle was brought back to life in 2002, following intensive and thorough renovation work.
Surrounded by the unique beauty of the Crete Senesi, the castle is an oasis of nature. Spot foxes, pheasants, and roe deer, listen to the hum of bees producing our honey, and enjoy the harmony of Tuscan wildlife.
Our beloved fox has even become the mascot of Castello di Leonina Relais.
